Administration
George has served as a board member, trustee or officer on a number of bodies including:
Conservatoires UK (CUK)
Initially the Committee of Principals of Conservatoires (CPC), George became a member of the Board when Royal Birmingham Conservatoire was admitted in 1994. Changing its name to the British Federation of Conservatoires (FBC), George served as a member and as Secretary from 1998 to 2003. FBC changed again to become ConservatoiresUK and George served as a Board member until 2010.
Association European Conservatoires (AEC)
George became involved with the AEC from 1993 and represented Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for 17 years until 2010 and Codarts Rotterdam thereafter. In 1999/2000 he chaired the EU CONNECT project, Music Education in a multicultural European Society and he served as Secretary-General from 2005 – 2010.
British Double Reed Society
Founder Committee Member of the BDRS from 1988 to 1993 and continues to be a member of the Society.
Arts Council West Midlands
Member of the Board of West Midlands Arts from 1999 – 2003 and a Board Member of the Arts Council West Midlands from 2003 – 2006.
Music Education Council
Member on the Executive of the MEC from 1997 and as Chair from 2001 – 2004. In this role George was Director of The Importance of Music symposium (2003) in the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Government ministers Charles Clarke and Tessa Jowell making speeches.
Incorporated Society of Musicians
Member of the Executive Committee from 1995 to 1997 and President from 2004 – 2005
Symphony Hall, Birmingham
Board member of Symphony Hall, later Performances Birmingham incorporating the Town Hall and Symphony Hall, from 1998 to 2010. George contributed to its Education Committee for a number of these years.
Youth Music
Board member of the charity Youth Music from 2003 to 2010.
Culture West Midlands
Board member of the Cultural Consortium, Culture West Midlands, 2003 – 2008
Music and Dance Scheme
Member of the Advisory Group of the DfES Music and Dance Scheme, 2005 – 2010

Vice-President of the IDRS, 2006 – 2009. Host of IDRS 2009, the society’s annual conference.

Trustee of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust since 2007.

Patron of the Barbirolli International Oboe Competition since 2008.
